A different approach to mattress reviews

Your body doesn't need to be held.
It needs to be free.

Humans have been sleeping on firm surfaces on their sides for all of history. The mattress industry convinced you that you need engineered softness to do what your body already knows how to do. You don't. You need a surface that stays out of the way.

The mattress industry has it backwards.

Every mainstream mattress site asks “What position do you sleep in?” then recommends a mattress that molds to your body in that position. Here's what they miss —

What they tell you

  • “Memory foam contours to your natural curves”
  • “Zoned support keeps your spine aligned”
  • “Side sleepers need a softer mattress”
  • “Pressure relief at key points”

What history and science show

  • Your “natural curves” right now reflect years of habitual tension — contouring locks them in
  • The “ideal spine alignment” model was derived from cadavers and never validated on living people
  • Humans have been side-sleeping on the ground for all of history — no pressure relief needed
  • You change positions 20–40 times per night — a mattress that traps you is making your muscles work

How we evaluate mattresses

One question: does this surface let your body do what it needs to do during sleep? We break that into five criteria.

Freedom of Movement

Can you move, roll, and reposition without fighting the surface?

Non-Interference

Does the mattress avoid imposing an engineered shape on your body?

Responsiveness

Does the surface push back, or does it absorb and trap?

Consistency

Does it behave the same regardless of what position you're in?

No Habit Reinforcement

Does the surface avoid locking in your existing tension patterns?
